As I entered menopause, sexual intercourse became progressively more uncomfortable*

Menopause and Vaginismus

These last several years as I entered menopause, sexual intercourse became progressively more uncomfortable. I assumed that it was just my sensitive skin and the friction that was causing the pain, but it became worse with time, almost unbearable.  Although I am familiar with menopause and some of its drawbacks, I never realized it could impact me, physically, sexually, and emotionally the way it did.

I mentioned it to my gynecologist who suggested I use more lubrication during sex. I tried numerous lubricants but they all hurt and/or irritated me.  Gynecological exams did not hurt me, only sexual intercourse.
As my discomfort grew into excruciating pain, I tried to avoid intercourse as much as possible. I eventually became so disturbed by this situation that I finally sought help for it.

Fortunately, I had been to the Women’s Therapy Center many years ago for an unrelated problem.  Drs. Ditza and Ross had been so helpful to me once before, I knew I could trust them again with such an intimate, sensitive issue.
We talked, performed exercises, I did homework, and after just 5 sessions I feel like a new person. Sex is totally pain-free. The first time my husband and I had sexual intercourse after being treated at the Women’s Therapy Center, I was shocked. I expected pain but had none whatsoever. It was such a relief!

I realize now that many gynecologists and other medical professionals – although we rely on them to help us deal with these issues – don’t quite understand the extent of the pain patients sometimes complain about.  This is what happened to me. I’m not sure if it is because they don’t have any solutions for our problems or if it is just that they don’t realize or believe that the severity of our pain is actually possible. They don’t seem to “get it” the way Drs. Ditza and Ross do.
Dr. Ditza, Dr. Ross, Dr. Lauren: you are so wonderful and a pleasure to work with. Your office is welcoming, the staff is warm friendly, caring, and always made me feel at home.

You took a very delicate topic and problem and made me feel safe. It was such a relief to hear that I was not alone with this issue and that many menopausal women face these problems. I know I am one of the very lucky ones to have found you all and this center. Thank you for all you have done for me years ago and again, now, years later.*

Hugs,
