Many women are hesitant to use tampons in fear that as the tampon absorbs blood it expands to the point of causing vaginal discomfort/pain.
If you share this worry, we would like to reassure you that you have nothing to fear: even a fully-absorbed tampon will not expand to such troubling proportions.
The vagina is capable of comfortable expansion because of the ‘folds’ within it (rugae) – like a pleated skirt that can expand when pulled wide – making intercourse comfortable, let alone a small object such as a tampon.
Note: women with vaginismus will often share this worry as their vagina is not yet trained to the sensation of penetration. Once the vaginismus is resolve, they should be able to use tampons with ease and confidence.
