Stretching Your Vagina: A Guide to Vaginal Dilators & The Effects On Your Vagina

Last Updated on November 6, 2025

Quick Answer: What Are Vaginal Dilators and How Do They Help?

Vaginal dilators are smooth, tube-shaped tools used to gently retrain the vaginal muscles to relax and allow comfortable penetration. They help women overcome vaginismus, restore flexibility after menopause or surgery, and relieve painful sex by combining physical stretching with anxiety reduction.

What is a vaginal dilator?

A vaginal dilator is an object that mimics the ‘tube-like’ shape of the vagina and is inserted into a woman’s vaginal opening.  Although often viewed as a medical device, vaginal dilators can also be used for sexual pleasure like they would a dildo.

Vaginal dilators are typically made of either plastic or medical grade silicone, are of smooth surface, come in different lengths and widths from as little as a pinky to as large as an erect adult penis.  Most are manual but some are vibration-enhanced that are geared toward sexual stimulation.

Presently (2025), there are numerous vaginal dilators manufacturers and sellers, and the dilators come in different colors, inside different storage bags, as well as with/without instructions for use.  Which set to get depends on personal preference, budget, professional guidance, and availability in your locale.

How do dilators work with vaginal stretching?

The purpose of vaginal dilators determines how to use them:

  • For medical treatment, their purpose is to ‘train’ the vagina for normal vaginal penetrations without duress such as with vaginismus, or to restore vaginal expansion and penetration such as in menopause, following surgery, or after breast & female cancer treatment;.
  • For sexual pleasure, they would be used to mimic the penis’ thrusting action during sexual intercourse.

Because dilators come in a set of graduated sizes, from small to larger, the woman can progress gradually as per tolerance, vaginal expansion, and emotional (anxiety) state. If the woman cannot self-treat, she would seek the guidance and assistance of a healthcare provider – a pelvic floor physical therapist or gynecologist – who specializes in such intervention.

How do vaginal dilators help stretch your vagina?

The term ‘stretching’ needs clarification when it relates to vaginal dilators: can be a physical stretch, a sensory stretch, an anxiety-stretch, or any combination of these…

  • Physically speaking, if the vagina is structurally restricted, when you use a vaginal dilator consistently, it will stretch the vagina in a controlled, therapeutic manner as much as physiologically possible;
  • Vaginismus speaking, when the vagina is structurally normal but subjected to the clenching reaction of underlying anxiety/fear of pain, progressive use of vaginal dilators will desensitize this disruptive reaction so that she can ‘own’ her vagina and all its uses;
  • Menopausal speaking – natural, surgical, or chemical as with chemotherapy – when the loss of estrogen diminishes the vaginal pliability and flexibility, progressive use of vaginal dilators will retrain the vagina to expand and accommodate penetration.  Note: this process would be further enhanced if the woman can be prescribed vaginal estrogen cream therapy to re-estrogenize the tissue and reverse the process of vaginal atrophy;
  • In cases of radiation or gender reassignment, the use of dilators is essential to restore and attain full vaginal volume for use = a combination stretch: physical, sensory, and emotional;
  • Lastly, if we speak of painful sex (dyspareunia), the progressive use of vaginal dilators typically assists in restoring pain-free sexual intercourse.

Does vaginal dilator therapy loosen your vagina permanently?

No, vaginal dilators and vaginal dilator therapy do not alter the structure of the vaginal tissue, nor permanently make a vagina looser.

What vaginal dilators do is train the muscles to relax, desensitize resistance, and keep the vaginal tissue flexible so the woman can use her vagina for all functions in a comfortable manner = training and maintaining, not altering structure.

In other words, dilators promote and maintain elasticity, reduce scarring & adhesions after pelvic procedures, prevent narrowing (stenosis), desensitize fear and clenching of the pelvic floor muscles, increase comfort of vaginal penetration, and helps with resolving painful sex.

Are there side effects of using vaginal dilators?

Vaginal dilators are generally safe when used correctly.  However, there could be some unwanted challenges:

  1. Discomfort & soreness, especially when first using them or when moving to next size;
  2. Light spotting, due to micro tears at the opening, or chafing due to dryness, or when the vaginal walls are thinned out such as in menopause or after cancer treatment;
  3. Associated anxiety, worries, concerns about ‘what is going on inside the vagina that I cannot see?’
  4. Deep pain or pressure if the dilator is pushed too hard against the cervix or ovaries.  Watch our video, Hitting The Cervix;
  5. Infection due to poor hygiene/cleaning of the dilators.  Watch our video, Safe Sex With Sex Toys;
  6. Urethral chafing due to vaginal dryness or thinned out estrogenic tissue at the underside of the urethra

The fix?

  • Use lubrication. Watch our video, How to Use Vaginal Lubrication;
  • Do not force the dilator into the vagina;
  • Thoroughly clean the vaginal dilators;
  • Follow professional advice and guidance;
  • Consult with your healthcare provider as needed

How do vaginal dilators help treat vaginismus or dyspareunia?

Vaginal dilators are a well-established intervention for curing vaginismus and for addressing many causes of dyspareunia/painful intercourse because they ‘speak’ to the vagina and its limitations, as noted above.

  • They address physical restrictions;
  • They train muscle restrictions and tightening;
  • They resolve psychological components, such as fear of penetration;
  • They desensitize the automatic clenching of the vagina upon penetration;
  • They build confidence of using the vagina;
  • They assist with stretching of the tight vagina;
  • They help breaking the pain-fear cycle of ‘going in;’
  • They provide vaginal maintenance when the vaginal tissue is compromised.

Frequently Asked Questions About Vaginal Dilators

Q: Are vaginal dilators safe to use at home?
A: Yes, when used correctly with lubrication and gradual progression. If unsure, consult a clinician or pelvic floor therapist for guidance.

Q: How long does it take to see results?
A: With consistent use and professional guidance, most women see improvement in a few weeks, depending on the cause.

Q: Do vaginal dilators cure vaginismus?
A: They are an essential part of vaginismus treatment but work best when combined with anxiety management and clinical support.

Q: Can dilators make the vagina loose?
A: No. They retrain muscles to relax; they don’t change vaginal structure or cause looseness.

Q: Are dilators effective after menopause or cancer treatment?
A: Yes. They help restore flexibility and prevent vaginal narrowing caused by estrogen loss or tissue scarring.
