I first knew that I had a problem when I was 16 years old and not able to insert a tampon. My mom never used them so she really never instructed me on how to use them. When I was 17 years old I went to the gynecologist because I would get bad cramps and Mom rightfully thought that birth control pills would help the situation. I was in the office for 4 hours. First I wouldn't take my clothes off and then I wouldn't let him touch me. It was horrible. Sex has always been a problem. I first found the word "vaginismus" in an old book a friend let me borrow years prior. I had to wait 6 months for an appointment. When the day finally arrived I remember feeling extremely nervous and excited. I walked in for my initial meeting with my husband and knew that I made the right decision. My treatment progressed nicely and every week I could feel my confidence and self-esteem building. My treatment at Women’s Therapy Center was an experience that I will never forget; it taught me about my body, sex, and self-esteem. This treatment was an amazing journey.

Every night I would make up some excuse not to try again, or I would pretend I was asleep when my husband would come to bed. Vaginismus made me hate everything about our sexual life. I didn't want to make out, kiss, or do anything remotely sexual because I was afraid it would lead to 'trying'. I would encourage anyone who has the slightest impression that I am telling ‘your story’ to call The Women's Therapy Center. Please don't waste the time and money that we did on other inadequate resources such as surgery and sexual therapists, not to mention all the extra wine we had to buy to make me relax. The Women's Therapy Center not only changed our lives sexually, but we also gained 2-lifetime friends.

We knew my wife had a lot of ground to cover. She would have to 'rewrite' many, many years of feeling like a failure because of vaginismus. Of feeling broken, ashamed and incomplete. She jumped into it, following everything the doctors recommended and because of that, she changed. She healed. She grew. I got the pleasure of watching her whole demeanor change. Within days, her confidence, pride and self-worth had blossomed right in front of me. Her pride in and ownership of her femininity, and the strength through that is beautiful to behold. The doctors had involved me in each step and every progress my wife made, and I am so thankful they did. It meant that I could use those experiences, that knowledge, to know that she was healed. That I didn't need to 'protect' her, or worry that what we were doing would cause pain or feelings of shame.We were now free to express our love for each other in the ways we always wished we could.
